Greek Oregano (Origanum vulgare var. hirtum) Description:

  • Height: Typically grows to about 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) tall, though it can sometimes reach up to 24 inches (60 cm) in ideal conditions.
  • Growth Habit: A woody-based, perennial herb with small, aromatic, oval leaves that have a strong, peppery flavor commonly used in Mediterranean and Italian cooking. It has a bushy, spreading growth habit and can be grown in garden beds or containers.
  • Flowering: Produces small, pink to purple flowers in summer (mid to late summer), forming in clusters at the top of the plant. While the flowers are attractive to pollinators like bees and butterflies, they may also cause the plant to lose some of its flavorful leaf production when blooming heavily.
  • Care: Prefers full sun, well-drained soil, and moderate watering. It is drought-tolerant once established and thrives in warmer climates.
